Considering a Hair Transplant

More Information
Today, transplants are a part of the medical solutions landscape in restoring once defective or permanently scarred and useless body parts to fruition. With the advent of medical technologies that use skin grafts to restore body victims along with the all-too-popular organ transplants that have received wide acclaim, it is not surprising to see that hair transplants are also a viable alternative to the subject of hair loss. Contrary to popular belief, it is a very simple procedure that requires little healing time and no out of the ordinary surgical tools that may intimidate.

How Transplants Work?

Doctor For starters, a hair transplant surgery takes hair from one part of the scalp where hair is plentiful and inserts it into another part of the scalp where growth is minimal to none. One misconception is that hair transplant surgeries require the tedious task of inserting hairs one by one. This is not the case, as small groupings of hair consisting of 2 to 4 are relocated to speed up the process. In order to figure out the amount of hair groupings to be transplanted, doctors have to measure the thinning area according to square cm along with the groupings. From these calculations, doctors are able to space hair out accordingly. Scalp color and hair color play a prominent role in the decision of how many grafts to use, since (for instance) jet black hair on a pale white scalp would be needed in abundance.

The surgical procedure itself is very dynamic, to say the least. For starters, anesthetics and blades are used to numb the pain and carve near-microscopic incisions into the scalp. Scarring does not exist, as advanced technologies have allowed surgeons to use special closure techniques that actually promote growth through the incisions. Like root canals, there is not much room for error.

How Long Does It Take?

The amount of grafts done per session by hair transplant surgeons range between 1000 to 2500, depending on the patient’s needs. Typically, hair transplants are very expensive surgeries with each graft costing around 5 US dollars each. The sessions themselves could be as large or as periodical (small) as a patient would like. Longer grafting sessions usually add 3000 grafts while shorter ones with multiple sessions are significantly lower. On average, many surgeons ask that their patients go through one grafting session since the healing process takes about a week.

Is Hair Transplant Surgery Safe?

Surgeons have to maintain precision and a careful eye during surgery. Hair transplants are stressful for the surgeon, as they have to constantly deal with applying anesthetics to your scalp to preserve its strength and pay close attention to cutting grafts. In addition, each replant of the hair has to be precise so that it grows in the right direction.

All in all, hair transplants are an excellent solution to those looking for a permanent remedy to their hair loss problem. Although it is a complex procedure with a long healing process and the possibility of multiple sessions, it can pay off immediate dividends in the various self satisfying and social aspects of your life.
